The Law Can Only Do So Much

When Roe v Wade was decided in 1973 voiding all laws governing abortions even its supporters were embarrassed the matter was considered Constitutional Law. One critic wrote:

"What is frightening about Roe is that this super-protected right is not inferable from the language of the Constitution, the framers' thinking respecting the specific problem in issue, any general value derivable from the provisions they included, or the nation's governmental structure." The decision, he said, "is not constitutional law and gives almost no sense of an obligation to try to be."

The Federal government should not play any role in the abortion issue, according to the Constitution.

The law can only do so much. The law isn't what allowed abortion; abortions were already being done in 1960s against the law. The courts came along and conformed to the social and moral changes that were taking place in society. Law reflects the morality of the people; without morals there can be no law. It is up us as parents and citizens in the way we raise our children, how we interact and talk with our friends and the good example we give to bring about changes to our culture toward greater respect for life.

How Much Longer?

Few Americans realize just how costly our foreign policy is. A senior economic adviser to George Bush embarrassed the White House when he warned the Iraq war could cost $100 to $200 billion. In 2006 estimates of the long-term costs of the war, including care for our maimed soldiers increased to $2 trillion. By the beginning of 2007 the $2 trillion figure was considered low.

Our 700 bases in 130 countries now cost $1 trillion per year to maintain. In 2008 the Defense Budget was $623 billion, the largest budget since WWII and we are not fighting WWII.

As in domestic spending where higher budgets rarely translate into better performance, it is doubtful that much of this spending is actually contributing to our security.

With $9 trillion debt and possibly $50 trillion in entitlement liabilities how much longer can we afford this counterproductive extravagance?

Blogs and Elections

In January 2005 I wrote:

"Blogs should make future elections interesting. With no way to control them, governments will have no way of restricting them as they restrict 527s and other election tools. And, as there are no controls, accuracy and truthfulness will not be limiting factors.  As studies routinely show, when there is no accountability people's behavior is unreliable. Once, it was advocated that a million monkeys banging on a million keyboards would eventually produce the complete works of William Shakespeare but thanks to the Internet we now know that is not correct. But just imagine what a million monkeys banging on a million keyboards will do to future elections."

Trading Family for Job

Both dads and moms need to be involved in their children's lives. When either become CEO or Chairman of the Board, they are trading their family for the "honor" of the position. If Obama wins he will have traded his children for the Presidency. If McCain and Palen win Palen will have traded her family for the Vice Presidency.

It is long time past the time to move on

Is there no end to the whining? Relatives of those who died in the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and those who died in the aftermath apparently believe they are now special. They are not special. Yes it is tragic their family member died but people die everyday, some in much worse ways. In the beginning the families signed up for big book deals and movie deals. Then they wanted large insurance payouts and now they are whining about scholarships for their children. Some students said they expected large scholarships that would cover much of all of their tuition only to receive a few thousand dollars talk about entitled. They sold their family member we own them now and their families are on their own. Get off the public’s back and pay your own way to college and beyond. It is well past time to move on.

Reporters MUST report not just be public relations announcers.

Referencing the article in the New York Times, “Sex, Drug Use and Graft Cited in Interior Department” It is difficult to work with someone, have sex with and socialize with the same individual and remain objective.

While on a much different level the media in general has the same problems. If a reporter wants to have sources they can go to, to “scoop” the opposition that reporter cannot be completely honest when reporting on areas involving that source.

As defense attorneys and prosecutors have an adversarial relationship so must reporters and the people they are reporting on. If you are going to report truth, complete truth must the only measuring stick.

Reporters MUST report not just be public relations announcers.

Freedom and Federalism

Hi Ray,

In Freedom and Federalism I found a quote:

"... a powerful national government may encroach considerably upon the liberty of individuals as well as of the different States, and assume the responsibility for it, without weakening the Empire Idea, if only every citizen recognizes such measures as means for making his nation greater."
---Adolph Hitler

Kind of interesting how some things never change. I  believe Benjamin Franklin said something to the affect any people who give up freedom for security get neither....

When is a war a just-war?

Hi Ray,

On and off for a while I have been looking into what constitutes a good war. Recently I heard that we do not have enough troops in Afghanistan because of our diversion war in Iraq. The war in Iraq is tenable only if it helps the war in Afghanistan but in not way does Iraq fit the definition of a just war.

Being in Venezuela Russia now has a bargaining chip to get the United States out of Georgia. Today is a good day to be an enemy of the United States because of George Bush we cannot respond and things are only going to get worse.

Have you ever considered what defines a just war?"
For over a thousand years that has been a Christian definition of what constitutes a just war. This just-war developed in the fourth century. The requirements for a just war have varied to some extent but there are shared principles.
First, there has to be an initial act of aggression, in response to which a just war may be waged.
Second, diplomatic solutions must be exhausted.
Traditional just-war criteria also demand that the initiation of war be undertaken by the proper authority. Under the U. S. Constitution, the proper authority is neither the president nor the United Nations. It is Congress.
In Iraq there was no act of aggression against the United States. We are 6,000 miles from Iraq. Stories about unmanned drones coming to get us were not especially plausible.
Diplomatic solutions had not been exhausted; they had hardly been tried.
Congress unconstitutionally delegated its decision-making power over the war to the President. By accepting Congress' unconstitutional act the President himself acted unconstitutionally, i.e. illegally.
Those who advocated war with Iraq claimed Saddam had committed an act of aggression against the United States: he had shot at our airplanes. Those American planes were monitoring "no-fly zones" over Iraq. Authority for such zones was said to come from U. N. Resolution 688, which instructs nations to contribute to humanitarian relief in the Kurdish and Shiite areas. The resolution says nothing about no-fly zones, and nothing about bombing missions over Iraq.
Saddam Hussein missed every single airplane for 12 years, as tens of thousands of flights were flown indicates just how little threat Iraq was to the United States. Iraq for all practical purposes had no functioning air force, antiaircraft weapons, or navy. This was supposed to be the great threat, requiring urgent action. Such nonsense insults the intelligence of the American people and makes the rest of the world wonder about our sanity.

Poem to Mom

My son came home from school one day, with a smirk upon his face.
He decided he was smart enough, to put me in my place.

"'Guess what I learned in Civics Two, that's taught by Mr. Wright?
It's all about the laws today, the 'Children's Bill of Rights.'

It says I need not clean my room, 'don't have to cut my hair
No one can tell me what to think, or speak, or what to wear.

And I have freedom from religion, regardless what you say,
I don't have to bow my head, and I sure don't have to pray.

I can wear earrings if I want, and pierce my tongue & nose.
I can read & watch just what I like, get tattooed head to toe.

And if you ever spank me, I'll charge you with a crime.
I'll back up all my charges, with the marks on my behind.

And don't you ever touch me, my body's for my use,
Not for your hugs and kisses, that's just more child abuse.

Don't preach about your morals, like your Mama did to you.
That's nothing more than mind control, and it's illegal too!

Mom, I have these children's rights, so you can't influence me,
or I'll call Child Services Division - better known as C.S.D.!'"

 Mom's Reply and Thoughts

Of course my instant instinct was to toss him out the door.
But the chance to teach him a lesson made me think a little more.

I mulled it over carefully, I couldn't let this go.
A smile crept upon my face, 'He's messing with a pro'.

Next day I took him shopping at the local Goodwill Store.
I told him, "'Pick out all you want, there's shirts & pants galore.

I've called and checked with C.S.D. who said they didn't care,
if you wore cheap Wal-Mart shoes instead of Nike Airs.

And I've canceled that appointment to take your driver's test.
The C.S.D. is unconcerned so I'll decide what's best."

I said "'No time to stop and eat, or pick up stuff to munch.
And tomorrow you can start to learn to make your own sack lunch.

Just save the raging appetite, and wait till dinner time.
We're having liver and onions, a favorite dish of mine."

He asked "Can I rent a movie, to watch on my VCR?"
"Sorry, but I sold your TV, for new tires on my car.

I also rented out your room, you'll take the couch instead.
The C .S.D. requires of me but a roof above your head.

Your clothing won't be trendy now, and I'll choose what we eat.
The allowance that you used to get, will buy me something neat.

 I'm selling off your jet-ski, dirt-bike & roller blades.
Check out the 'Parents Bill of Rights', it's in effect today!

Hey hot shot, are you crying? Why are you on your knees?
Are you asking God to help you out… instead of C.S.D..?'

Olbermann's Tirade

If you have an opportunity check out Keith Olbermann's tirade last night. It was something about someone not telling someone where Bin Laden is hiding. I noticed that MSNBC put a disclaimer that it was commentary but look at Olbermann he looked, acted, and sounded like someone who has lost it, gone over the edge, has cracked up. Looked very much like an attack of ego.....

9/11 clinging to the past

I lost interest in the 9/11 "victims" when they all became rich because a relative happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and they were fortunate to have died on the morning news shows.

Actions and Reactions

Looking for motive is not excusing or looking for an excuse. Detectives always look for motive behind crime, but no one thinks they are looking to excuse the crime. When looking for motive one is accused of "blaming America" for the attacks, it is unreasonable not to expect people to become resentful, and to want revenge, when our government bombs them, supports police states in their countries, and imposes murderous sanctions on them. If you want to understand Iran look at the United States policies in Iran and our support of the Shah. Our government's foreign policy has put the American people in greater danger and made us more open to attack than we would otherwise have been.

In May 1996, on 60 Minutes Madeleine Albright said that half a million dead Iraqi children as a result of the sanctions on that country during the 1990s were "worth it." How could that remark, which was broadcast all over the Arab world, not help but provoke a response. If Americans lost that many of their family members, friends, and fellow citizens would they not seek to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice much like we began to do in Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001 attacks?

This does not mean Americans are bad people, or that they are to blame for terrorism. It only means that actions cause reactions, and that Americans will need to prepare themselves for these reactions if their government is going to continue to intervene around the world.

Actions Cause Reactions

Looking for motive is not excusing or looking for an excuse. Detectives always look for motive behind crime, but no one thinks they are looking to excuse the crime. Who believes the attacks on the United States have nothing to do with what our government does in Islamic countries? When looking for motive one is accused of "blaming America" for the attacks, it is unreasonable not to expect people to become resentful, and to want revenge, when our government bombs them, supports police states in their countries, and imposes murderous sanctions on them. Look at the United States policies in Iran and our support of the Shah to understand Iranian people's view of our country. Understanding motive is not attempting to assign moral responsibility to anyone other than the criminals who carried out the attacks. The question being asked by seeking to understand motive is, given the interventionists foreign policy isn't it vary likely to lead to such responses? Our government's foreign policy has put the American people in greater danger and made us more open to attack than we would otherwise have been.

In May 1996, on 60 Minutes said that half a million dead Iraqi children as a result of the sanctions on that country during the 1990s were "worth it." How could that remark, which was broadcast all over the Arab world, not help but provoke a response. If Americans lost that many of their family members, friends, and fellow citizens would they not seek to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice much like we have done in Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001 attacks?

This does not mean Americans are bad people, or that they are to blame for terrorism. It only means that actions cause reactions, and that Americans will need to prepare themselves for these reactions if their government is going to continue to intervene around the world.

The definition of the term civilian is "one not in the armed services or the police force." The definition of the term combatant is "a person engaged in fighting." The definition of combat is "armed conflict, battle; struggle, contest."

In war, there are no noncombatants. Anyone, providing support of any form including moral, weapons, ammunition, transportation, medical, food, etc is engaged in the conflict or engaged in the foreign policy and therefore is a legitimate target.

Anyone providing support to the United States' troops in Iraq or Afghanistan are legitimate targets. All citizens of the United States are legitimate targets. Despite the Geneva Convention, there are no rules in war. We should understand that and act accordingly.

The people of the United States should understand that war is armed hostility between nations and that includes every citizen of each country. War is not something we send our military off to do while we live on as if nothing is different. We cannot tolerate government policies that are likely to make each of us a target. The purpose of war is to kill, destroy, maim, injure, and win! War is not to be taken lightly.

For the past 50 or so years, we have allowed our government to sacrifice the lives of our military as well as the lives of citizens of other countries. It is not the responsibility of the United States to free the people of the world. We are not and should not be nation builders.

War is a terrible responsibility and the citizens of the United States have failed in their responsibilities. And because of that failure, the world is a much more dangerous place.

Ask Better Questions

Instead of asking about transferring members of our military from Iraq to Afghanistan how about asking about removing our troops from those 130 countries around the world? With national bankruptcy just around the corner and both candidates promising to reduce taxes, duhhhhh the income by which everything is paid, no one is asking if we can afford to main troops in 130 countries. Remember when the media asked meaningful questions looking for answers and not sound bites?

Being Rich Does Not Equate to Intelligence

Am I the only person who is not impressed with what the mega rich think make them better than the rest of us? The Internet reports Allen Iverson has been trying to sell his house in Villanova, PA for over a year now and is current asking price is million dollars lest than he paid for it five or so years ago। Just how stupid is Iverson?

Iverson paid almost three million dollars for a house with six bedrooms, a pool, a pool house, a stream and a waterfall and this all on four acres।

Was it the floor-to-ceiling Palladian windows that made the house worth what Iverson paid? Or was it the his and hers marble bathrooms? Maybe the coffee bar, media area and a veranda overlooking the grounds were worth the price? Surely the four additional en-suite bedrooms and separate guest quarters with a bedroom, living room and kitchenette made it all worth it। I'm sure the 12-seat movie theater, billiard room, and a lounge with a custom wood carved bar accommodating 200+ wine bottles was well worn.

Since Iverson is only a sample anyone with something to sell must drool when they see these overpaid morns coming their way।

Look around at how many “men?” have diamonds in their ears। Diamonds are only valuable because people think they are "rare" which they are NOT. Today you can buy a man-made diamond for $145 that is clearer than a "mined" diamond that amazingly stupid people pay $60,000 for.

Imagine what good these morons could do for society if they would think with their heads not with what is in their Haynes.,

Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews DEMOTED!!!!!

MSNBC recognizing that Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews are not and never were News reporters they were opinion pieces is a start. Prior to rehab one must admit they have a problem. For NBC to take so long to recognize what the world has known for years is an indication of how far NBC and all of its little networks have fallen in the news reporting business. They now have to attempt to rebuild their reputation as a network to be taken seriously. Time will tell. But don't hold your breath..

Don't Hold Your Breath

For all of you who are looking forward to the 2008 Presidential campaign being over, don't hold your breath. The 2012 run for the White House begins in 59 days. If Barack wins this time it will be Barack vs Sarah and if John wins, how about Hillary vs Sarah? We have now entered into the continous campaign for offices, any offices.

Surge is not victory

The surge in Iraq has proved nothing. The bad guys have pulled back and are waiting to see what will happen. Anyone claiming victory is premature, victory will not be evident until the U.S. leaves and Iraq stands.

We will not know until that time but I suspect the bad guys will take over just like North Viet Nam did after we left their country.
